About Antarctica
Antarctica is one of the five continents of the world and covers a large portion of the South Pole region. With an area of 14 million km², it is the fifth largest continent in the world. This vast continent is an important center for many scientists, researchers, and exploration expeditions due to its ecological and scientific significance.
Antarctica remained an undiscovered continent for many years. Many exploration expeditions were organized in the 19th century to explore its coasts. In the early 20th century, a major step was taken in the discovery of the continent. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911. British explorer Robert Falcon Scott also reached this region shortly thereafter. However, due to the difficulties encountered on the return journey, Scott and his team lost their lives.
Antarctica has a harsh and severe climate. Much of the continent is covered in ice, and temperatures can drop to -40°C for much of the year. The winter season is a long and dark period also known as polar night. Therefore, the continent can only be visited during the summer months.
Antarctica is home to one of the world's largest ice caps. This ice sheet is on average about 2.3 km thick and covers an area of approximately 14 million km². Glacier melting has become a significant problem in recent years due to the impact of global climate change.
While the harsh climate makes it difficult for humans to live on the continent, it provides an excellent habitat for various species such as seabirds, penguins, seals, whales, and other marine mammals. Antarctica is famous for its biological diversity, clear ice sheets, and magnificent landscapes. The continent is also an ideal place for astronomical observations because the lack of atmosphere and its pristine condition make the night sky very clear.
