Iberia Flights

About

Iberia is Spain's flagship carrier and a major player in the global aviation market. Established in 1927, it has grown into one of Europe’s most respected airlines. With its hub in Madrid-Barajas Airport, Iberia connects 130 cities worldwide across Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Known for its robust network, the airline particularly excels in routes between Europe and Latin America, holding a leadership position in this market. Iberia is part of the International Airlines Group (IAG), which includes British Airways, and operates alongside its low-cost subsidiary, Iberia Express.

Iberia provides passengers with a range of services tailored to both leisure and business travelers. It emphasizes a premium flying experience, offering well-regarded Business Class cabins on long-haul flights, which include fully flat beds and fine dining. The airline also integrates modern technology into its services, including a robust loyalty program (Iberia Plus), a comprehensive mobile app, and in-flight entertainment systems. Despite facing operational challenges in recent years, Iberia remains committed to delivering high-quality service and sustainable aviation practices.

Check-in

Iberia offers several check-in options to make travel easier. You can check in online, through their mobile app, or at the airport. These choices help you skip long lines and save time.

For a smooth check-in, Iberia suggests these deadlines:

  • Air Shuttle (Madrid-Barcelona): 15-20 minutes before departure
  • Short- and medium-haul flights: 45 minutes before departure
  • Long-haul flights, Africa, and Tel Aviv: 55-60 minutes before departure
  • Buenos Aires, Ecuador, Peru, Santo Domingo: 75 minutes before departure
  • Caracas: 120 minutes before departure

Online and mobile check-in start when you buy your ticket for some places. For flights to the US, UK, Cuba, and others, it starts the day before. But, check Lagos and San Jose for different times.

At the airport, self-service kiosks let you pick seats and get boarding passes. But, they won't work if you need a passport check or security screening. Follow the rules for checking bags at Madrid airport.

Boarding gates shut 20 minutes before takeoff. Passengers board from the back to the front. Iberia has stopped priority boarding for now. They suggest checking hand luggage to move less on the plane.

You can get a mobile boarding pass 24 hours before flying or through Iberia's apps. Use it at check-in, security, and boarding. You can also get a paper pass if you need it.

Online check-in is not for flights with IB5XXX or for special needs. It's also not for Air Shuttle flights with multiple passengers.

Iberia says to get to the airport three hours before your flight. This gives you time for check-in, baggage, and getting to your gate.

Baggage Allowance

Hand Luggage

Iberia allows Economy Class passengers to bring one piece of hand luggage, while Business Class passengers can carry two. Each piece must not exceed 10 kg in weight and dimensions of 56 x 40 x 25 cm. Additionally, personal items like a handbag, laptop, or small backpack are permitted. Passengers traveling with infants are allowed a separate bag for baby necessities weighing up to 5 kg. Liquids are restricted to 100 ml containers, and all must fit in a transparent, resealable bag.

Checked Baggage

The checked baggage allowance varies by ticket type and destination. For Economy Class, passengers generally have one piece weighing up to 23 kg, while Business Class travelers can check two pieces with the same weight limit. Dimensions for each bag should not exceed 158 cm (sum of height, width, and depth). Excess baggage fees apply if the weight limit is surpassed, but not beyond 32 kg per piece.

Special Luggage

Iberia accommodates a range of special luggage, including sports equipment and musical instruments. Items such as skis, bicycles, and golf clubs are accepted as checked baggage but must comply with packing and weight requirements. Fees depend on the type of item and the flight's route. For instance, transporting golf equipment may cost between €35 and €130 depending on the flight distance. Instruments small enough to fit within cabin dimensions can be brought onboard, while larger ones are checked as cargo, subject to extra charges.

Seat Selection

Traveling with Iberia lets you choose your seat. Some fares, like Business Class and Premium Economy, let you pick for free. Others might cost extra.

Business Class on long flights has all-aisle access and lie-flat beds for comfort. The newest Airbus A350-900 even has private suites with doors for extra privacy.

Premium Economy offers wider seats and more legroom. It's for those wanting more comfort than Economy Class. The entertainment screen is also bigger, at 12 inches.

In Economy Class, seat sizes vary by plane. Seats are 30 to 32 inches tall and 18 inches wide. Even Basic fares can be upgraded for better seats, including extra legroom.

Loyalty Program

Iberia Plus is the loyalty program of Iberia Airlines, part of the Avios program. Members earn and use Avios points on Iberia flights and with partners. The program has elite tiers with benefits like lounge access and extra baggage. Members also get perks across the oneworld alliance.

Earning Avios points is easy. Members get 3 Avios per dollar on Iberia, Aer Lingus, British Airways, or LEVEL. Economy flights earn 0.25 to 1 Avios per mile. Business tickets earn 2.5 Avios per mile. New members get a 85,000 Avios bonus after spending $5,000 in the first three months.

Food & Beverage

Iberia Airlines offers a carefully curated food and beverage experience that varies by cabin class and flight duration. In Economy Class on long-haul flights, passengers are provided complimentary meals designed in collaboration with top catering experts. These meals often include a snack, a main course, and dessert, with vegetarian and other dietary options available. For shorter flights, snacks and beverages are generally available for purchase through Iberia's "Gastrobar" service, which features options like Starbucks coffee and premium snacks. Passengers can also pre-order special meals for dietary or religious needs, ensuring a personalized experience.

Business Class passengers enjoy a premium dining experience with an emphasis on Spanish cuisine, featuring locally sourced ingredients and seasonal dishes. Meals in this class are paired with a selection of wines curated by sommeliers. Long-haul Business Class services include multi-course meals and upgraded snack offerings, such as fresh fruit baskets and gourmet sandwiches. Iberia continually enhances its onboard dining, recently introducing sustainable practices like discounts for passengers bringing reusable cups to minimize plastic use.

In-Flight Entertainment

Iberia offers a variety of in-flight entertainment options to ensure a pleasant travel experience. On long-haul flights, passengers have access to a diverse selection of the latest films, available in multiple languages, including English, French, Italian, and Portuguese. The genres range from comedy and drama to action, suspense, and popular Spanish cinema. These flights also feature up to 78 television programs, covering TV series, documentaries, sports, and travel content. For gaming enthusiasts, there are options like Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Blackjack, available on A330 and A340-600 aircraft.

On medium-haul flights, Business Club passengers can enjoy entertainment through devices like PlayStation Portables, offering access to recent film releases, popular TV shows, and up to 10 audio channels. Across all classes, the focus is on providing tailored options to suit diverse tastes, making Iberia flights enjoyable for leisure and business travelers alike.

Pet Policy

Traveling with your pets on Iberia can be easy if you follow their pet policy. This policy covers how pets can travel in the cabin or cargo hold. It also talks about the rules for service animals.

Iberia lets pets under 8 kilograms (17 lbs) travel in the cabin. They must be in a carrier that fits under the seat. Pets over 8 kilograms must go in the cargo hold. But, pets over 45 kg can't fly on Iberia. You need to tell the airline 48 hours before to arrange for your pet's travel.

Iberia also welcomes service animals in the cabin. But, you need to provide the right documents. Tell the airline early to make sure your travel goes smoothly.

Remember, you're responsible for your pet's behavior during the flight. Iberia can deny travel if your pet is aggressive or the carrier is not safe.

The Dalí Lounge covers over 20,000 square feet. It can hold up to 450 guests, offering plenty of space to relax and refresh before flights. It's open from 6:30 AM to 11 PM every day. It welcomes all premium oneworld passengers, including first and business-class travelers, and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members.

Inside, guests find various seating options. There are comfortable reclining chairs and dining tables to suit everyone's taste. The lounge has two buffet areas with regional and international dishes like pan-fried fish, paella, and salads.
