Turkish Airlines is a state-owned airline of Turkey. Turkish Airlines started its business in 1933 with five machines, today Turkish Airlines has the largest flight network of an airline in the world. Also it is member of the Star Alliance. The home airport is Istanbul Airport (IST), which replaced Istanbul Ataturk Airport (ISL) as the country's largest airport in April 2019.
Turkish Airlines operates regular and charter flights. There are a lot of domestic flights in Turkey in the schedule. For example, only the Istanbul-Ankara route runs more than 100 times a week. Check-in
You can check in for a Turkish Airlines flight at the airport, at home online, or through a mobile application. In addition, you can use special self-service kiosks. This is a very pleasant moment, as it saves you a lot of time, now you do not have to stand in long lines. But if you are transporting non-standard luggage or pets, then online check-in will not be possible.
Turkish Airlines check-in times vary depending on your chosen check-in option and your destination:
- Turkish Airlines online check-in starts 24 hours before flight departure and ends 90 minutes before departure;
- It is possible to check in at kiosks 12 hours and no later than 45 minutes before the flight departure;
- It is possible to check in at the counters at the airport 2-3 hours in advance, depending on the direction, and no later than 45 minutes before departure.
Baggage Allowance
Carry-on Baggage
You can take 1 piece of baggage up to 8 kg in hand luggage (2 pieces in business class). The total sum of the three measurements must not exceed 118 cm (23x40x55 cm).
Plus, 1 personal item from the list is allowed: a hand bag, a bag with a photo or video camera, a bag with a laptop (all no more than 15x30x40), a stroller or a full-sized stroller, an umbrella (without a sharp end), a bag with children's things.
Checked Baggage
Free checked baggage allowance varies by route and fare. Exact information is indicated on the ticket, they can also be found before purchase.
For domestic flights, you have different baggage allowances depending on the class of your flight ticket.

- Business Class: 30 kg
For international flights, There are two types of baggage allowance on Turkish Airlines: weight and piece.
For a weight-concept flights: There is a maximum of 20 kg for Economy class tickets, and a maximum of 30 kg for Business class tickets.
For a per piece flights: You have the right to 2 pieces of luggage, with a maximum of 23 kg for Economy class tickets and 32 kg for Business class tickets.
Not: As of 2022, there is also the option of traveling without luggage in economy class on some international flights.
Special Luggage
Some types of sports equipment can be transported on Turkish Airlines flights free of charge. One passenger is allowed to carry one set for skiing (or snowboarding), as well as for playing golf, free of charge.
On domestic flights: bicycles, canoes, inflatable boats (up to 3.5 m long), archery, diving and surfing equipment are transported at the moment for an additional fee.
Special fares apply on international routes for the transportation of bicycles, equipment for archery, hockey, climbing, golf, skydiving, rafting (inflatable boats), skiing, snowboarding, diving, surfing.
Musical instruments are carried on account and in accordance with the free baggage allowance. Smaller instruments can be transported instead of hand luggage (case length no more than 118 cm and weight up to 8 kg), larger ones as checked baggage, but in these cases the airline does not bear any responsibility for their safety. When transporting an instrument in a passenger seat, its weight should not exceed 75 kg, and its dimensions should not exceed 140x42x25 cm.
Seat Selection
Passengers flying with Turkish Airlines Business class can choose the seat they want free of charge when check-in. Unfortunately, passengers who buy an economy class flight ticket have to pay a seat selection fee of 45-60 TRY for domestic flights and 9-139 USD for international flights.
If you are flying “ExtraFly” or “PrimeFly”, standard seats are free of cost, but most desirable seats, like extra legroom, exit etc.. are paid for.
Loyalty Program
For regular customers of Turkish Airlines, a Miles&Smiles bonus program has been created. Traveling with Turkish Airlines, passengers accumulate bonuses, and in the future, they can pay with bonuses for award tickets or extra baggage, as well as upgrade the class of service for free. There are 4 tariffs in the bonus program. Depending on the fare, a certain amount of bonuses is accrued for each flight.
You can add miles to the program when flying both with the airline itself and with partners. If you have accumulated miles with Turkish Airlines, you can spend them on new flights, additional services on the airline's flight, in addition, you can pay for purchases from airline partners or use miles from Miles&Smiles credit cards.
Food & Beverage
Meals for Turkish Airlines passengers are prepared by chefs. Meals on board the airline received the award of the best flight catering in Europe. Meals depends on the service tariffs, however, each passenger can choose dietary, kosher, vegetarian or vegan meals suitable for themselves. Passengers note the very high level of cuisine of Turkish Airlines.
On domestic flights, economy class passengers are offered light snacks, sandwiches and desserts; drinks, like most airlines, you can choose at will - water, juice, tea or coffee.
All business class passengers on flights are offered welcome drinks, and throughout the flight, travelers can order tea, coffee and a variety of soft drinks.
In-Flight Entertainment
Turkish Airlines ranked seventh in the in-flight entertainment systems ranking at the Skytrax awards in 2021. Depending on the class of service and aircraft type, the airline offers its passengers an in-flight entertainment system with its Planet multimedia platform.

Pet Policy
You have to get permission to fly with pets on Turkish Airlines flights. Turkish Airlines pet bookings must be made at least 6 hours before departure time. At turkish airlines, it's not that different from traveling with pets than other airlines. THY and Anadolu Jet require your pet's ID, a valid vaccination and health certificate, and in the case of traveling abroad, an entry permit and other documents required by transit countries.
The number of pets that can be carried in the passenger cabin depends on the type of aircraft. Some "dangerous" breeds, such as the Doberman and Pit Bull, are not allowed on the plane.
Carriage of pets is not included in the free baggage allowance and is subject to a fee. The size of the Turkish Airlines pet carrier must be 23x40x55 cm and the total weight of the animal carried in the cabin, including the cage/bag, must not exceed 8 kg. If the cage and animal weigh more than 8 kg, they are transported in the cargo hold .
Lounge Usage
Turkish Airlines has long been known among frequent flyers for its excellent lounges, reputed to be the best available for Star Alliance Gold customers. In April 2019, the entire Istanbul Airport moved and with it the lounges.
There are two gigantic Turkish Airlines lounges in the international departure area of the new Istanbul Airport, a Miles&Smiles lounge for status customers and a Business Class lounge for Business Class travelers only.
As usual, in addition to business class travelers , Star Alliance Gold customers also have access on the day of departure and can also bring an accompanying person, who must also be booked on a Star Alliance flight.
